Home fans surrounded the Dillingham Pool on Thursday, October 17, as the ‘Iolani Boys Varsity I Water Polo team faced off against the Mid-Pacific Owls in both teams’ Senior Nights. The Raiders secured a victory against the Owls, in what was the last regular-season game for the seniors at the home pool.
Early in the match, the Owls got on a tear, scoring three goals within the first few minutes while holding the Raiders to only one. The Owls demonstrated a mobile and aggressive offense and often swarmed the ball in order to maintain possession. However, the Raiders utilized quick and effective defense, including multiple blocks from senior goalie Toby Tobin ’21, to keep the Owls offense at a standstill. The Kojima brothers -- Carter Kojima ’20 and Connor Kojima ’20 -- led the Raiders’ stifling defense throughout the game, while Sunny Katagiri ’21 and Dustin Carr ’20 carried the Raiders offense in order to score four unanswered en route to a 5-3 victory.
After the exhilarating game, the Senior Night festivities kicked off, with each senior taking their “senior shot” before being adorned in leis by friends and family.
With the regular season in the books, ‘Iolani goes into the ILH Water Polo Championships as the 3rd ranked seed and will face off against powerhouse Punahou next week Wednesday, October 30, at Dillingham Pool.
