Crowds gathered at Ala Wai Park to cheer for the ‘Iolani Varsity Softball team as they faced Pac-5 last Wednesday, April 10, for their Senior Night game honoring the Class of 2019. A setting sun beat down on the bleachers, while ‘Iolani Raiders warmed up to gain victory over the visitor. After a dominating performance over Pac-5 through five innings, the Raiders defeated the visitor with a score of 17-2. Friends and families of the softball team congratulatd the team before offering leis and warm hugs to the senior players.
The first inning started off with a high powered Raider offense, overwhelming the Pac-5 starting pitcher, Krystal Akaji ’19. Endless hits from ‘Iolani’s skillful batters put pitcher under a huge amount of pressure, which inevitably resulted in 11 earned runs in the first inning alone. Senior Aleia Agbayani ’19 showed out in particular, leading ‘Iolani with four earned runs.
The Raiders slowed the pace in the next four innings, as they had no significant points gained, except for the third and fourth innings when the Raiders produced 6 additional points to the final score. However, despite slowing down offensively, the Raider’s stifling defense made it extremely challenging for the Wolf Pack to attempt a comeback. The seniors served as veterans, leading the whole team to concentrate on their field defense no matter the deficite. In the end, the Raiders only allowed the opponent to score two points during the top of the fifth inning before the game was called off due to mercy rule.
After the game ended, the Varsity Softball team celebrated their victory in front of the joyous crowd who showed them constant support. Later, each senior was introduced in front of cheerful teammates and coaches, as well as their loving family members and friends. Cameras, posters and candy leis hovered around the seniors as they shared warm hugs with their loved ones. The night ended with softball team members gathering in a circle to sing ‘Iolani’s Alma Mater, which will forever be in hearts of the senior athletes.
