The Best Valentine's Day Playlist

February 14, 2019

February 14 can fall into two categories: a day filled with love, or one full of heartache.  Valentine’s Day can either be the greatest or worst day of your life as you spend it with your significant other, or with your dogs on the couch watching rom coms… alone.  Many of us know the latter feeling a little too well, making this holiday seem like more of a day to get through rather than a celebration of love. However, for the lucky few, Valentine’s Day is the best day of the year.

We all have different ways of coping with the excitement or sadness of the annual day of love, but there is no better way to simmer in your feelings of love or loneliness than by listening to good music.

Here’s a list of the 14 best songs to listen to on Valentine’s Day, whether you are a Single Pringle or head over heels in love:

“Happy Without Me” by Chloe x Halle

This song is about a girl who reminisces her times with a boy and the pain that comes with seeing him with another girl.  Most people who have been in a relationship can relate to the “bittersweet” feeling that comes with seeing their former partner happy without them.

“Cool People” by Chloe x Halle

Another hit by Chloe x Halle, this song is for people who are looking for someone or who have a small crush and have a giddy feeling.  “Cool People” is a song of appreciation for people who bring hope to others, especially those who are looking for a relationship.

“Me, Myself, and I” by Beyonce

“Me, Myself, and I” is an early 2000s hit by Beyoncé who sings about how she does not need a man to live independently.  She confidently sings about her empowerment after a nasty breakup and realizes that she is stronger now than she ever has been.  Also, who doesn’t love a good Beyonce song on Valentine’s Day?

“Who’s Loving You” by Jackson 5

This classic Jackson 5 song is a mood for anyone who feels they wronged someone and is in heartbreak.  With its bluesy rhythm and tone, “Who’s Loving You” is a great song to sing with your friends to get over any sadness you might be feeling.

“Everything” by Ella Mai (feat. John Legend)

Even though “Everything” is about two people in love, it is a song that just screams Valentine’s Day!  Even if you are lonely, this song has a great beat and vibe, not to mention two amazing singers who will make you want to sing along.  This is one of those songs that will make you look forward to meeting that special someone in the future.

“Valentine’s Day” by LANY

This song is not only about Valentine’s Day, it is about moving on after a break up and giving love another chance.  Even though the singer is moving on, however, he knows that their next partner will ever be the same as their former one.  This song is a good Valentine’s Day song because it encourages everyone to go and put themselves out there even if might be hard!

“Never Can Say Goodbye” by Jackson 5

Like “Who’s Loving You,” the Jackson 5 share another blues song about how, no matter how hard they try, they can’t seem to leave a relationship.  Michael Jackson sings about how there is a strange feeling every time his partner tries to leave.

“EX” by Kiana Lede

After a breakup, the singer is worried about being a stereotypical “ex” who stops talking to each other.  In this song, Kiana is trying to say that even though she and her former partner have broken up, they can still be real friends without being in a relationship.

“Could’ve Been” by H.E.R (feat. Bryson Tiller)

Ever wanted to be in a relationship but couldn’t find the words to tell this person how you feel?  This song is about regret and how the singer dreams about what “could’ve been” even though she constantly denies these feelings to avoid being hurt.

“I Wished I Missed My Ex” by Mahalia

This song is for people who are out of a relationship but are feeling empowered.  In “I Wished I Missed My Ex,” Mahalia sings about having no regrets about leaving someone who hurt her.  She also shows how she doesn’t feel like being in a relationship and how she needs to focus on herself before she can move on to anything new.

“Thru These Tears” by LANY

In “Thru These Tears” by LANY, the singer is feeling extremely depressed, yet hopeful because he knows his pain will get better as time goes on.  This song is reassures broken hearts that, even though they are hurt right now, give yourself time to heal because “everyday [you] let go just a little more.”

“Malibu Nights” by LANY

In this song about heartbreak, the band begs for someone to help them with their broken hearts.  “Malibu Nights” is for the people who are struggling with a breakup on the national day of love.

“How Does It Feel?” by Samm Henshaw

In contrast to all the former songs on this list, “How Does It Feel?” is an upbeat song that will make you want to dance.  It’s just about a guy wondering what a real love is like. In the song, Samm Henshaw wants to know what a non-superficial, non-physical love is.  For everyone who is celebrating Valentine’s Day, this song really makes you appreciate who you love and who loves you, even if it’s not in a romantic way.

“Only Wanna Be with You” by Samm Henshaw

For all the people who are starting out a relationship this year, “Only Wanna Be with You” is a great song to listen to!  It is about a person’s realization of love and the definitive feeling of wanting to be with a certain guy or girl. This song is a class serenade with an acoustic base that is romantic, but also a great tune to listen to.
