The ‘Iolani Boys Varsity Water Polo team experienced a tough loss to Mid Pacific Institute in their second game of the season following an intense showdown in double overtime.
The September 19 game at ‘Iolani started off with a bang after the Raiders won first possession. With a dominant start, the Raiders led 2-0 by the end of the first quarter. However, the Owls came back, scoring in the first fourteen seconds of the second quarter and later tacking on two additional goals. The Raiders fought back and edged the Owls with a 4-3 lead at halftime. During the third quarter, both the Raiders and the Owls scored evenly to raise the tally to 6-5 before Ethan Lau ’19 scored two goals at the end of the quarter, increasing the Raiders’ lead to 8-5 and his personal game count to 5 goals. The Owls closed the gap and forced overtime with three unanswered goals to tie it up the game in the fourth quarter, including a half pool shot with forty seconds left.
The first overtime depended heavily on defense, with no goals scored in the process. After countless minutes of regulation and overtime play, the Owls swooped down to take the win with two unanswered goals in double overtime, with a final score of Mid Pacific Institute 10 - ‘Iolani 8.
