On the supposedly unlucky evening of Friday, October 13, the ‘Iolani JV Boys Tennis Team deftly swept Maryknoll on our home courts in a 5-0 victory to sew up a pristine 12-0 undefeated season.
“Everyone on the team was really good, and all of us tried our best to get the best result,” said Team Captain Roy Song ’19, the lone junior on the team. “There were some big challenges during the season in which we almost lost, but we stayed strong together, and we pulled off the valuable victories.”
The team had spectacularly, albeit narrowly, clinched a 3-2 victory against the Punahou Gold Team on the Thursday night before. Described as a “tale of two great teams” by Assistant Tennis Coach George Asato, the Buff n’ Blue posed the greatest threat to the Red Raiders’ throne.
This year is the second in a row that the JV team has won the championship without dropping a single match. With a bright future in sight for the junior varsity and varsity boys’ teams alike, ʻIolani’s tennis program as a whole is looking especially well-established.
“The ʻIolani tennis program has the potential to be even greater in the future,” said the prophetic Captain Song. “The ‘One Team’ environment always boosts the morale. I saw lots of improvement in tennis skill itself throughout the season, in myself as well as the other members of this team. People will get better and better at tennis as they become involved in the ‘Iolani tennis program.”
With the Intermediate and Varsity tennis seasons still to look forward to, we shall see what else the 2017-2018 school year has in store for “the sport of a lifetime.”
