On an unusually bright Monday morning, the students of ‘Iolani’s Upper School filed into the Lower Gym to be formally welcomed back to school by its most public figures. After a performance by Halau ‘Iolani and introductions from Proconsuls Tai Tomozawa ’13, Ken-Ben Chao ’13, and Trey Takara ’13, new Head of School Dr. Timothy Cottrell made his first appearance to the student body as a whole since his first day on July 1. He gave a speech that at first may have seemed trivial to some, but slowly blossomed into something much more applicable to what he hopes to make the ‘Iolani experience become. Comparing the ‘Iolani experience to his own personal experience watching the Olympic Games this summer, Dr. Cottrell urged students to root for something greater and band together to work toward a common goal, to revel in even the littlest victories and learn from losses.

The Proconsuls also unveiled this year’s theme, “Celebrate,” complete with party noisemakers. In accordance with their theme, the Proconsuls plan to expand the lunchtime intramural games, which they have coined as the Raider Games, to include much more than just dodgeball. The Proconsuls also announced that the school is opening slots for students to decorate panels on the walls separating construction from the rest of campus. Both Dr. Cottrell’s speech and the Proconsuls’ theme helped to set the tone for the rest of the school year, one which leads the hopes of great things to come.
