I know what you mean. The track system for math is pretty dopey. I came in during sixth grade and was lucky enough to be (wrongly) placed in the advanced track, which opened up a lot of doors in the sciences toward the end of my high school experience AND put me among a lot of intelligent and patient students who could help inspire and teach me the material. But for quite a few of my friends, they were either flying by the seat of their pants without trig, or they had to take a costly course during the summer to catch up, which is pretty ridiculous, considering the other fundamental summer classes you ought to be taking instead... These guys weren't any slower on the uptake than me, but because of the track system, they were hobbled early on and there were repercussions at the end of their time at `Iolani. Something to definitely investigate further.
